We've been waiting to hear from the US Embassy on the scheduling of the DNA appointment for HG and her mom. They required that the lab in the US send a DNA kit to be used specifically for me (which is crazy because there are kits already at the lab here in Guatemala and they are all sealed). The kit arrived on Friday, but the Embassy was closed due to Saturday being the Feast of the Assumption and so it was delivered yesterday/Monday at 9:47 a.m. I immediately emailed the office, asking for the DNA appointment. No response. This morning, I check my email before I start calling the office and I see an email from the lab in the US. She was actually responding an email sent to her yesterday by the US Embassy and she copied me on her response. The US lab failed to put the kit in an envelope inside the shipping envelope and so they cannot use it. The Embassy says that it cannot attest to the integrity since there is no other envelope. Whatever. So, today the US lab will send ANOTHER kit to Guatemala for my usage. It should arrive tomorrow, but we will see. I'm sure the Embassy will not allow me to schedule the appointment now until next week. Another week lost.
Part of what gets me about this whole lab fiasco is that there MUST be some level of trust with the labs. I understand that there has been abuse of this in the past, but where do you draw the line? Anytime you have people involved, whatever the situation may be, there is room for corruption in my opinion. As humans, we have that evil and sinful side of us. If the lab has been authorized by the Embassy to conduct the tests here in Guatemala, then they should be permitted to conduct the tests. If the US lab has been accredited to supply the kits and process the samples, then they should be permitted to do so. How is adding an extra envelope to an already sealed kit going to change any of that? Yes, I'm frustrated. Yes, I'm angry. No, I don't understand. I will pray for wisdom, understanding, forgiveness, and a spirit of forgiving others today. It's all I know to do.

I'm guessing that you also have to pay the additional shipping fees?
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sure I will since they are using my FedEx number to send things. It's gotten so expensive to send, too--about $80 for just a letter so I'm sure this costs more. Lovely, right?
ReplyDeleteThis is just nuts! I am thinking of you and checking this blog daily, hoping to see some faster progress. I've also been following everything else going on down there in the adoption arena...seems like some things never change. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christi. Yes, things are crazy down here. I'm ready for this to be over! I just push and push every day. Yuck!
