The girls and I went to an english speaking church service today. The 4 of us made up over 50% of the attendance (7 people including us). There is no pastor, just a lady and her husband that bring hymnals and liturgy papers. Scripture is read and then a time for reflection on it, but no sermon. There is also no communion unless there is a priest that happens to either come. While it wasn't awful and was nice to do something a tad bit familiar, I don't know that we will go again. We can have "home church" and get about the same thing accomplished. More pressing for me personally, however, is the location of the church service. No, the walk isn't bad and isn't any farther than what we normally walk in a day. The service is held in a "cathedral" but also on the grounds are a hospital and living quarters for elderly and handicapped persons. While I knew this in mind when we went, I had not prepared myself for it. Remember that HG lived in the same hogar where HV and HM lived while their adoptions were completed? She lived there for 3 years of her life. I had asked the ownership what would happen to HG if/when they ever closed their doors or when HG got too old or big for them to care for her. They told me that they would send her to this place because "they are equipped to care for kids like her there." I read the blog of an American man that does mission work here in Guatemala. He goes to this orphanage almost daily, trying to nurture the children and trying to help show the caregivers how to care for these little souls. While I'm sure this place is better than the living conditions that some kids have back at their home, I would not say that they are equipped to care for kids like HG. HV asked me why there were several kids in wheelchairs that were tied with sheets to columns in the courtyard. From reading this guy's blog, I know it's because these kids can move around in their wheelchairs on their own and the caregivers don't want them getting into things. She asked me why two boys were simply laying on mattresses without blankets. One of them looked like he had fallen asleep from boredom because he still had his drinking cup in his hand. We talked about the good services that the place provides not just for these kids but through the other medical services that they have there. HV's mom has used the medical services there. BUT, HG would have never been taught anything. She would have been put in a wheelchair, probably tied to a post in the wheelchair because she's smart and would figure out how to move the chair (remember that she has only been walking for 1 year and so while she was in the care of that first orphanage, she was not mobile at all). She would have never been given a chance. I am grateful that God laid on our hearts to adopt HG. For months I have asked for you all to pray that God will protect her mind, keeping her open to learning, and her body safe from harm. God surrounded her with angels during her time in those orphanages. I praise Him and thank Him for that. She is a bright girl and she has a chance now. But, it seems odd to me to go to worship in the same facility where she would have been dumped. Maybe it's not.
Oh, as we were leaving the complex, there was a small courtyard area with some colorful flowers. Guess who we saw there? Yep, Grammy the Colibri. Both girls and I were just so excited to see her, just after we finished our church service. I guess Grammy was watching over all of those kids. She always had a knack for caring for God's creatures.
